10 Super Cheap DIY Ideas To Brighten Your Home
Want to jazz up your home surroundings but are limited to a tight budget? You don’t need to flash the cash to create an inspiring, lively home environment. There are a tonne of super easy, cheap DIY projects that won’t take up too much time either! In my days of being a student, I was always searching for budget ways I could increase the ambiance of my room. Here’s a few good ideas to get you started:
- Washi Tape Photo Frames
You can pick up washi tape really cheaply, and it’s such a useful little item to have! Etsy have a huge range of different colours, patterns and widths. For a super cheap wall art idea, tape your photos to your wall with washi tape to create a frame. It looks cute and costs next to nothing! This type of tape is also really handy for gift wrapping too, there are plenty of uses for it!
- Decorative Lampshades
Give plain, dull lampshades an uplift! Boring beige is not very inspirational, I personally love this idea of adding ruffles, perfect for both a little girl’s room, or an adult boutique style of room. You really don’t need an extensive list of equipment for this project either, just material for the ruffles, scissors and a glue gun!
- Mason Jars As Vases
If you want a cheap method of displaying flowers in the home then why not buy a few mason jars, or use some that you may already have lurking in your cupboards! I like to use three jars on a windowsill, each with a single flower in them. It’s easy, simple and gives the room a fresh feel.
- Graffiti Art Anything!
Graffiti is a love it or hate it. Some people like the urban feel it can give to a space whereas for some it’s too much. It is however a really cheap way of adding some personal art to your home. You don’t have to be daring and graffiti a whole wall, you could always graffiti onto a plain canvas or even in the garden, jazz up your fence! Montana spray paints are ideal for this type of art, I would personally recommend them from experience, and you can also buy metallic from this range too!
- Cover A Mirror
Do you own a standard wooden mirror, perhaps propped on your mantelpiece? Give it a new lease of life and cover the edge with a fun fabric! Choose something that compliments the living space and grab your scissors and glue gun! You may also want to use a spray adhesive to ensure that it stays put.
- Pom Poms!
Pom poms are pretty big right now, even in fashion! I see lots of jumpsuits and tops finished off with a cute pom pom trim. So why not for the home too? Making a pom pom from scratch does take a little time but you’ll feel a huge sense of accomplishment once it’s down! Hang them anywhere you fancy OR get creative and go for a pom pom bouquet like this one!
- A Rag Rug
These are pretty awesome and can be made from your old t shirts or fabrics that you have lying around. It will take a good days’ worth of your time but all you need is the fabric, a flat doormat, scissors and a glue gun. For a full tutorial see here!
- Upcycle Furniture
I recently discovered chalk paint, which is an actual godsend. Some of my furniture was in need of a refresh, but I didn’t want to fork out for new wardrobes when the wood itself was in a perfectly find condition. After a little bit of Googling I discovered chalk paint was the answer to my prayers. It can be applied straight onto wood, there is NO need to sand down or prep the surface, you just paint away. I thought this would be too good to be true but I can confirm it works amazingly and I now have wardrobes in a gorgeous shade of antique white!
- Spray Your Coat hangers
Do you have plain wooden coat hangers in your closets? Give them a spray of paint! Create a colourful rainbow, or go for a stylish metallic. You could reaaally crafty and paint them white and add some metallic patterns, or your initials!
- Light It Up!
Does your lounge or bedroom lack warmth? Purchase some fairy lights (which can be found in supermarkets for a low cost) and place them inside a transparent glass vase for a cool light feature which will also add atmosphere and warmth to a room!
