12 Easy DIY Fall Wreaths You Can Make At Home

August 3, 2019 by Shellie Wilson

There is something about a fall wreath on the front door that instantly makes a home feel ready for the season. As soon as the weather starts to cool and the colors outside begin shifting to warm shades of rust, gold, orange and brown, I start thinking about autumn decorating.

The good news is that you do not need an expensive store-bought wreath to create a beautiful fall entrance. Some of the most charming autumn wreaths are handmade using simple supplies such as burlap, reclaimed wood, faux leaves, flowers, ribbon and even items you may already have tucked away in your craft cupboard.

We have gathered 12 easy DIY fall wreaths you can make at home, with styles ranging from rustic farmhouse and neutral autumn décor to colorful floral designs and fun seasonal statement pieces.

There are wreath ideas for traditional front doors, porches and entryways as well as designs that can be displayed indoors above a mantel or on a feature wall. Whether your decorating style is natural and understated or you love all the pumpkins, leaves and warm fall colors you can find, there is plenty of inspiration here.

Many of these projects can also be adapted to match the supplies you already own. Change the ribbon, swap the flowers, add different foliage or adjust the color palette to make your wreath work with your existing fall décor.

Pour yourself something warm, pull out the glue gun and take a look through these 12 fabulous fall wreath ideas.

How to Choose a Fall Wreath to Make

Before choosing your project, think about where you plan to display the finished wreath.

For an exposed front door or porch, choose sturdy materials such as wood, grapevine, outdoor ribbon or weather-resistant faux foliage. More delicate fabric, paper and chalkboard-style wreaths are generally better suited to a protected porch or indoor display.

You can also use the color scheme of your existing décor as a starting point. Traditional autumn oranges, golds and browns create a classic fall look, while cream, beige and muted green work beautifully for neutral farmhouse decorating.

Easy Ways to Customize Your Fall Wreath

Make any of these wreath ideas your own by changing the flowers, ribbon or seasonal embellishments. You could add miniature pumpkins, pinecones, acorns, dried-look leaves, berries or a simple wooden “Welcome” sign.

For a wreath you can use for several months, keep the main design fairly neutral and add removable seasonal accents. Start with leaves and flowers for early fall, add pumpkins closer to Thanksgiving, and then swap those pieces for winter greenery when the season changes.
