12 DIY Halloween Mantel Decor Ideas for a Spooky Handmade Display

There’s something lovely about decorating one little corner of the house for Halloween. You don’t need a front garden full of skeletons or enough cobwebs to frighten the neighbours. A few handmade decorations on the mantel can give the whole living room an October makeover.

I particularly like Halloween mantel decor that starts with things already tucked away in a cupboard: empty bottles, old picture frames, lace scraps and those inexpensive pumpkins that have seen several autumns. Give them a little attention, arrange them together, and suddenly they look as though they belong in a wonderfully dusty witch’s cottage.

This roundup brings together 12 individual projects you can use to create your own display. There are friendly ghosts, glowing lanterns, vintage-inspired decorations and a few darker touches for anyone who prefers their Halloween a little more mysterious.

My advice is to choose three or four favourites. One taller decoration, a small group of objects and something hanging across the front of the mantel will give you plenty to work with.

1. Upcycled Halloween Potion Bottles

Empty bottles make excellent starting points for a witch’s apothecary display. These DIY Halloween potion bottles from Rustic Passion turn ordinary bottles into seasonal decorations with an aged, mysterious feel.

I’d group bottles of different heights at one end of the mantel, keeping their labels facing forward. Add a couple of books beneath the shorter ones so every bottle has a chance to be seen. It’s a useful way to make a small collection look more substantial.

2. A Vintage-Style Halloween Spell Book

A pretend spell book gives a Halloween display a little story. Who left it there, and what exactly were they planning?

Our Halloween spell book feature with a free printable points you towards a Craftaholics Anonymous project for giving an ordinary book a vintage spell-book appearance.

Display yours upright beside potion bottles, or lay it flat beneath a lightweight decoration. An unwanted secondhand book is a good starting point; there’s no need to sacrifice a favourite.

3. Cute Terracotta Ghost Pots

For a cheerful Halloween mantel, try these terracotta ghost pots featured on CraftGossip. The little ghost faces and bow detail give them a friendly personality.

A small group would look lovely beside pumpkins or a framed Halloween picture. I like this option for a display the grandchildren will enjoy without finding it frightening. Keep the surrounding decorations fairly simple so those little faces remain the main attraction.

4. Etched Ghost Candle Holders

Stacy Risenmay’s DIY ghost candle holders use glass etching to create ghost designs on clear glass. The tutorial shows both frosted ghosts and clear ghosts against a frosted background.

These are a lovely choice when you want Halloween decorations that still feel light and uncluttered. Use battery-operated lights for your mantel display, and follow the etching product’s handling instructions when making them.

Try placing two different heights together rather than spacing identical holders evenly along the shelf.

5. Cheesecloth Ghost Garland

A garland brings the front of the mantel into the decorating scheme. This cheesecloth ghost garland from Making Lemonade features little shaped ghosts with simple faces.

Allow time for this project: the tutorial includes a 24-hour drying stage. It’s one to make ahead rather than begin just before guests arrive.

Hang the finished ghosts in a gentle curve across the mantel. Against a dark fireplace surround, their pale shapes should stand out beautifully.

6. No-Sew Vintage Lace Ghosts

If you love old textiles, these vintage lace ghosts from Flamingo Toes are a charming alternative to plain white fabric ghosts. The project uses lace runners or lace trim and doesn’t require sewing.

I’d hang a few above or beside the mantel, where the lace can drape freely. Pair them with an old frame, dark bottles and muted pumpkins for a display that feels like Halloween has arrived in a vintage cottage.

7. Paper Haunted House Lanterns

A miniature haunted house makes a wonderful focal point. These paper haunted house lanterns from Jennifer Maker include a basic house and additional variations for building a more elaborate haunted mansion.

One house is enough for a narrow mantel. If you have more room, make a little village and vary the buildings’ heights.

Use LED lights inside the paper houses. Their glowing windows bring the display to life once the room gets darker.

8. A Bat Branch Arrangement

For height and a strong silhouette, try this bat branch Halloween centerpiece from The Sweetest Occasion. Black bat cutouts attached to branches create the impression of a little flock taking flight.

For a mantel, choose branches that suit the available space and a vase with a stable base. Position the arrangement at one end, then balance it with a lower group of pumpkins or lanterns at the other.

This is especially effective against a pale wall.

9. A DIY Crystal Ball and Decorative Base

Gina Tepper’s DIY crystal ball and base adds a fortune-teller touch to Halloween decorating.

I’d give this piece a little breathing room rather than surround it with lots of tiny ornaments. Place it beside a spell book or a small collection of bottles, and let it become the object that makes visitors stop for a closer look.

It’s a fun alternative to using another pumpkin as your centrepiece.

10. Faux Concrete Pumpkins

These faux concrete pumpkins from Our Crafty Mom begin with inexpensive foam pumpkins. Paint and spackle create a textured concrete-style finish.

Their muted grey colour works beautifully with black decorations, pale ghosts and old metallic frames. They also offer a way to reuse pumpkins whose original colours no longer suit your decorating style.

Group a few together along the mantel, then remove the Halloween details afterwards and keep the pumpkins out for autumn.

11. Framed Halloween Silhouette Art

This framed Halloween silhouette tutorial from At Home on the Bay combines a witch silhouette, book-page background and an old frame.

It’s a lovely choice for a vintage-inspired Halloween display. The flat picture also provides a useful backdrop for smaller decorations arranged in front.

Choose a frame that fits comfortably on your mantel, and secure it appropriately if you’re displaying it leaning against the wall.

12. Black Lace Candle Holders

For a slightly gothic finishing touch, these black lace candle holders from The Sweetest Occasion dress up clear glass with decorative trim.

I love the combination of dark lace and a soft glow. Use LED candles for a mantel arrangement, particularly when displaying them near fabric, paper or garlands.

A small cluster would pair beautifully with the framed silhouette and faux concrete pumpkins.

How to Arrange Your Halloween Mantel Decorations

Start with your largest piece: the framed picture, haunted house or bat branches. Add a smaller group beside it, then step back before filling every remaining gap.

Repeating a few colours helps different handmade projects look coordinated. Try black, cream and grey for a vintage display, or white ghosts with orange pumpkins for something more playful.

Place taller items towards the back and smaller pieces in front, keeping faces, labels and lantern windows visible. A garland can finish the arrangement without taking up shelf space.

If the fireplace is in use, follow its required clearances and keep decorations away from heat, openings and vents.

The nicest Halloween mantel displays often contain a few familiar things given a seasonal twist. An old bottle, a slightly battered frame and a handmade ghost can look surprisingly lovely together. Choose the projects you’ll enjoy making, leave room for them to be seen, and build a display you’ll be happy to bring out again next year.
