This roundup of DIY Christmas holiday crafts is all centered around Buffalo check or Buffalo plaid. Sometimes it is referred to as Christmas Check or Christmas plaid.
Updated to add: I have also been told it is commonly referred to as Lumberjack plaid too.
Buffalo check has become more popular in the last couple of years as it is tied into the trend of Farmhouse styling, so it has naturally become popular again or the coattails of farmhouse decorating.
I love the black and white check, for something a little different at Christmas time, for many years we had black Christmas tree ornaments on our tree as it suited our decor, so maybe that is why I am really loving the check this year.
I plan to make some of the cinnamon tree decorations, as they seem simple enough for the children to help me. I am going to use these cinnamon sticks and this 0.6 inch Buffalo check ribbon. I do love the rustic look of torn fabric, but I know I will be pressed for time this year and I think the ribbon and cinnamon will look primitive enough on their own.

Most of us are led to believe that Buffalo check or buffalo plaid is American, but did you know According to legend and the Scottish Tartan Authority, the pattern was brought over to the U.S. in the 1800s by Jock McCluskey. Which makes is Scottish which of course makes total sense when you think of Scottish tartan.

Every Christmas, the family gathers around the kitchen table to make buffalo check Christmas decorations. It’s become a family tradition that started over a decade ago and has been passed down from one generation to the next.
It all started when Grandma Johnson decided to try something new for the holiday season. She had grown tired of the same old decorations she bought every year and wanted to personalize her home. Grandma Johnson had seen a video online of someone making buffalo check decorations and decided to give it a try.
The first time the family gathered around the kitchen table to make buffalo check crafts, no one was sure what to expect. But they soon discovered that it was a fun and rewarding experience. Everyone was able to collaborate and work together to create something special.
Making their own decorations also saved the family money. Grandma Johnson was able to buy the materials in bulk, and everyone in the family was able to make several decorations for the fraction of the cost of buying them in a store.
But perhaps the greatest benefit of making their own decorations was the special bond that it created within the family. Every Christmas, the Johnson family looks forward to gathering around the kitchen table and crafting together. They’ve even started making buffalo check decorations for their friends and family as gifts.
By coming together to make buffalo check crafts every year, the Johnson family has created a lasting tradition that brings them joy. The act of making decorations together has become a symbol of their love and connection. It’s a reminder that no matter how much time passes, family is always there for you.
