How to prepare at home for coronavirus and quarantine

August 3, 2020 by Shellie Wilson

Ok, so we all know about social distancing when we are out, and that we should be wearing masks in the company of others. But with increasing lockouts and curfews, have you considered what changes you need to do at your home to prepare for coronavirus and quarantine?

What should you stock up on? Should you get the flu shot? Should you still leave the house, and if so, when and how?

Please note, none of this is medical advice and you should always follow your local authorities instructions.

Here are some tips, tricks, and advice, gleaned from various media outlets.

We start with the folks over at Curbed.com, where we love the advice that ” Preparing for coronavirus isn’t about shutting yourself in—it’s about reaching out“, and that article, even though was written in Feb, is still relevant today, perhaps even more so as more and more of us are being forced to isolate and that the community will help you survive.

Next up, CNET gives you a round up what to stock up in your pantry, amongst other things. Go there to get that list, but stay there to understand the difference between social distancing, quarantine, and isolation :).

FutureLearn has some calm advice on how to help the younger ones in the family prep, and to not stockpile! Note that this is a commercial site, and they have courses for you to learn (many free) so it might be worth checking them out for other things to do when in isolation.

GoodHouseKeeping wrote this in the middle of March.

“Believe it or not, it’s still too soon to tell how the coronavirus might truly affect Americans, especially since we’re in the midst of flu season where other viral infections can easily spread. But it’s possible the virus will impact some Americans’ day-to-day schedules in the near future.“!

I think they all now wish that they could go and rewrite that part of the article :). Nonetheless, all their advice still holds true, including the one on getting bleach instead of wipes when you are at the store next.

ThisOldHouse has good advice on how to clean so your home to prevent Coronavirus spread and (another) checklist for if you are going into a 14 day lockdown. We also found this list from ages ago on how to give your kitchen a deep clean that could be handy.

Vox.com has a whole hub that publishes articles to help you navigate this crisis from a few angles and you should bookmark it. At the very least, check out the 7 questions about cleaning answered by an expert.

Finally, you can’t really go too wrong with the official advice by the CDC. The US Government’s main site is full of some good information and checklists and it should already be your go to place for the latest information.

Have you found a good reliable hub for staying at home with Coronavirus? Leave a comment below and we will update the article.
