Rhubarb Stepping Stones

April 11, 2012 by Amanda Formaro

Rhubarb Stepping Stones

Looking for a creative way to add rustic charm to your backyard or garden path? Rhubarb stepping stones are the perfect blend of nature and craft. Using just a few simple supplies—cement, a round mold like a shallow dish or plant tray, and one large, beautiful rhubarb leaf—you can create stunning garden pavers with deep, organic vein patterns pressed right into the surface. The natural shape of the rhubarb leaf acts like a botanical stencil, leaving behind intricate textures that look surprisingly high-end for such a simple DIY.

This clever project originally comes from a Swedish blog (don’t worry—modern browsers make translation a breeze!), but the process is so visual and straightforward that even non-Swedish speakers will have no trouble following along. The tutorial walks you through making your own cement leaf stepping stones, and the results are nothing short of magical. These rhubarb leaf stones look gorgeous tucked into flower beds, used as a whimsical walkway, or even displayed as stand-alone art pieces in your yard.

Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast or a weekend DIYer, this is one project you’ll want to add to your outdoor craft list. So head to the garden, pick your largest rhubarb leaf, and give your stepping stones a natural touch that will last for seasons to come. Don’t forget to snap a photo of your finished project and tag us—we’d love to see how you’ve styled your garden with these leafy beauties!

Now granted, the original blog post is in Swedish but most browsers have translators built into them these days. Her pictures are pretty self explanatory too. So check it out and make some for your garden!

We have a rhubarb plant in our garden that, for years, has perservered through the heat and storms. It astounds me at how large it gets and the leaves are so pretty! This is a very creative use for them and it leaves a lasting mark. Will definitely have to try that this summer!

I agree Liane, those plants are really hardy and the leaves are huge!
