When making rustic wood projects, I like to use a flat (non-glossy paint) for a more rustic finish. If I need to work quickly I use Krylon chalky spray paint.
and my favorite sanding tool is the Ryobi One cordless sander. It is not too heavy for me and gets into the nooks and crannies of my projects.
